Why Can’t They Care for Their Own Children?
There
are many countries in our world where poverty and suffering are a fact of life for much of the population. Some countries
are ravaged by famine and disease while others live every day in a state of war. Poor economic conditions and social decay
are common factors as well.
In
Russia
for example, the collapse
of the Soviet Union, plunged Russia into a social and economic crisis.
While conditions slowly improve, still more than 60%
of the population are considered low income to poor and at standards of comparison that are much lower than
that of US economic living standards. The official poverty guidelines in 2001 set poverty level @ $1,575 Rubles per month
which is approximately $50 US.
As the Russian people struggle to embody a democratic government
and free enterprise system, many social services
lag or are non-existent. This is much the same in many other impoverished and war torn countries.
What about Food and Clothes?
In
many of our world’s impoverished nations, malnutrition is a deadly enemy
of the orphaned children.
For
Example, in many of the Russian orphanages, a good day will find the children waking to a breakfast of mush, absent of any
sugar or milk. Noon will find them eating vegetable soup if supplies allow. Quite often they do
have bread (no butter), but fruit, sugar, meat and dairy products are rare or non-existent!
Dressed in shared rags of clothing, mismatched shoes that never fit, the children spend the day
playing and working. They clean, wash clothing and bedding.
They might work in a garden or make repairs with the limited resources available.
Evening
meals, if available are small snacks that consist of leftovers from the previous meals.
For
the orphans in these impoverished nations of the world, the result is the same for them all. The children go to bed hungry,
knowing that the following day will simply be a repeat of the one that has just passed.
They go to sleep without hope and have nothing upon which they can
base their dreams.
What Happens When They Become Ill?
When children are abandoned by their parents or become too ill for the orphanages, they are sent to a Children’s
Hospital. Conditions in the hospitals are much the same as the orphanages.
Due to overcrowding and the lack of medication, such as antibiotics,
many children do not survive. Medical supplies and equipment are antiquated, worn and much of the time, simply do not exist.
There are few diapers, ointments or adequate formulas for the babies. These hospitals are always understaffed
resulting in little or no individual attention for these critically sick children! Sanitation is impossible due to rodent
infestation, roaches and other insects as well as lack of supplies!
