Frequently Asked Questions

Why Can’t They Care for Their Own Children?

There are many countries in our world where poverty and suffering are a fact of life for much of the population. Some countries are ravaged by famine and disease while others live every day in a state of war. Poor economic conditions and social decay are common factors as well.

In Russia for example, the collapse of the Soviet Union, plunged Russia into a social and economic crisis.

While conditions slowly improve, still more than 60% of the population are considered low income to poor and at standards of comparison that are much lower than that of US economic living standards. The official poverty guidelines in 2001 set poverty level @ $1,575 Rubles per month which is approximately $50 US.

As the Russian people struggle to embody a democratic government and free enterprise system, many social services lag or are non-existent. This is much the same in many other impoverished and war torn countries.

What about Food and Clothes?

In many of our world’s impoverished nations, malnutrition is a deadly enemy of the orphaned children.

For Example, in many of the Russian orphanages, a good day will find the children waking to a breakfast of mush, absent of any sugar or milk. Noon will find them eating vegetable soup if supplies allow. Quite often they do have bread (no butter), but fruit, sugar, meat and dairy products are rare or non-existent!

Dressed in shared rags of clothing, mismatched shoes that never fit, the children spend the day playing and working. They clean, wash clothing and bedding. They might work in a garden or make repairs with the limited resources available.

Evening meals, if available are small snacks that consist of leftovers from the previous meals.

For the orphans in these impoverished nations of the world, the result is the same for them all. The children go to bed hungry, knowing that the following day will simply be a repeat of the one that has just passed.

They go to sleep without hope and have nothing upon which they can base their dreams.

What Happens When They Become Ill?

When children are abandoned by their parents or become too ill for the orphanages, they are sent to a Children’s Hospital. Conditions in the hospitals are much the same as the orphanages.

Due to overcrowding and the lack of medication, such as antibiotics, many children do not survive. Medical supplies and equipment are antiquated, worn and much of the time, simply do not exist.

There are few diapers, ointments or adequate formulas for the babies. These hospitals are always understaffed resulting in little or no individual attention for these critically sick children! Sanitation is impossible due to rodent infestation, roaches and other insects as well as lack of supplies!

How does Lifeline of Hope ensure that the Aid is getting to the orphans?: Lifeline of Hope has paid Child care Facilitators in-country to be usre that the children are receiving the benefit of your donations. Lifeline of Hope and the Orphanages being helped are monitored by the local governing authorities as well. All receipts for goods and services donated are on file with the governing authorities (when applicable) as well as Lifeline of Hope in-country (Russia) and at the US headquarters (Russia and all other countires). Regular visits to the orphanages by lifeline of Hope facilitators and government officials verify that the goods and services are being used for the purpose intended.

Why are there So Many Orphans?

In some countries, millions of children are losing their parents to AIDS and in other countries it is war. Whatever the reason, the result is the same…sweet innocent children with no parents, no home and small chances of survival.

Sometimes as in many cases in Russia, the parents of the children have no means by which they can support their children, as they themselves are starving. These factors have forced thousands of families to make the unfathomable decision to abandon or give their children to poor houses and children’s homes, just to save their lives…unfathomable and yet in some cases, heroic.

Each year, more than 120,000 new children are admitted to orphanages in Russia alone…

IMAGINE THAT EVERY SCHOOL AGE CHILD IN NEW YORK CITY IS IN AN ORPHANAGE AND YOU ARE STARTING TO GET THE PICTURE…but that is just Russia. There are between 100 and 200 million orphans throughout the world and the numbers are not improving!

What is it Like in an Orphanage?

There are no real alternatives to the orphanages in many countries and so they become the only source of refuge for the parentless children of these societies.

The best efforts of the government’s limited resources are not nearly enough!

While the Orphanage Facilities, Children’s Hospitals and Shelters are in various states of repair, most are far from adequate and many would be condemned by US standards.

Adequate food supplies are a constant concern and malnutrition is prevalent. Damp and cool conditions, lack of proper clothing, bedding, cleaning and sanitation supplies and equipment are the norm.

In many of the orphanages, mice and cockroaches flourish and share quarters with the children and workers in these facilities. There is rarely if ever, heated water for bathing and cleaning and the drinking water is unsafe by any standards.

These factors result in underdevelopment, both physically and mentally and often lead to permanent health problems and even death.

Survival is a way of life for these orphans!

How many orphans are there in the world? Some estimates put the number of orphans at 50 million while other estimates put the number as high as 200 million. Sadly the orphans are even abandoned by the statistics

How many countries does Lifeline of Hope work in?- Lifeline of Hope started in Russia and now has orphanages in India, Pakistan, Uganda, Kenya, Mexico, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine with more being developed in other countries.

How much actually goes to help the children? Lifeline of Hope works hard to be good stewards with the donated goods and money. Our goal is that no less than 85% of donations go into programs that help the children. See our financials at GuideStar online.
